Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a unique place--accessible only by ferry. A limited number of people are allowed to visit each day, so it is never crowded. Part of the island is wooded, with lots of moss covered live oaks and wind-blown trees.

The ruins of Thomas Carnegie's estate still stand, but wild horses are the only inhabitants!
Walking along the path toward the beach, we suddenly came upon a row of abandoned cars.

The trees--subjected to winds off the ocean--grow in some strange contortions!

Cumberland is a great place, but I would suggest visiting on a day that is cooler than 104. We were actually OK on the beach (although we got sunburned in spite of sunscreen), but hiking in the woods in the heat and humidity almost did us in!
