My church had a Christmas service last week, singing Christmas carols, reading the Christmas story, and afterward eating Christmas goodies. The tree and nativity were nice touches, and I love, love, love this idea. Merry Christmas!!

As I came home the other night, head down to hold all my stuff and talk on the phone, I didn't see this guy until I was right on top of him. He was smack in the middle of my storm door, right at eye level! He sure is pretty, and has grown a good bit since the last time I saw him down by the door (I guess it is the same one). I have to leave a light on so when I come home at night I can see to get in, and I suppose he takes advantage of the bugs the light attracts.

More painting...but with the completion of the living room, all I have left is some trim throughout the house and some touch-up. And one bathroom ceiling. And maybe that bathroom. (All that furniture moving does get tiring...)

All the contents of the living room cabinets were on the dining room table, so once again we are having a "picnic" of sorts.

I'd not grocery shopped or run any errands to speak of for over a month, so I had to do some major shopping this weekend. I should last for a while now.

Friday was the last day of a two week Big Draw that was intense, stressful, and very tiring. My schedule had been hectic and upside down. I left the lab for supper, sitting down at my favorite Chinese restaurant, taking time to east slowly and savor the good food, listening to calm Chinese music, and being waiting on by quiet, polite people. A nice change from the pace of my recent past.

2009 Day 168 The long road home

We decided to go from Baton Rouge to Atlanta via Jackson, Mississippi, where we stopped for some incredible brownies and a short visit with Daddy and Martha.

A few hours later, we realized we were simply too tired to make it all the way to Atlanta, so stopped and spent the night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with my ever hospitable sister-in-law, brother, niece, and (yet unborn) nephew. Thanks, McConnell family!!

Becky, Jerry, and Juli very, very patiently taught me to play Settlers of Catan. It was fun, but most of all I enjoyed the time spent with the three of them.

Baton Rouge Farmers Market. The green and white squash are Cushaw, which I'd never heard of. They are huge, and (according to a site I read) can be cooked "like any other winter squash."

Always a good hostess, Becky fed me well!!

I have to report that Becky has weeds in her lawn. They are beautiful weeds, though, which she carefully avoids with the mower.

I spent a few wonderful days with my good friend Becky and her family in Baton Rouge. We rode across the Mississippi River on a ferry (then rode right back).

Becky took me out to her land in St. Francisville. This country girl was thrilled! The land was perfect....it has woods and fields and hills and lovely trees--and a chimney perfect for outdoor fires! It's happy land.

June 8 we (Lauren, Jonathan, and I) drove to Pensacola Beach Naval Air Station, where we met up with my dad, stepmom, stepsiblings, siblings, nieces, and nephews.

I've found that I tend to forget to take pictures of people, and usually come home with shots of flowers and animals and anything but people. I started out making an effort to do better, but at the end of the trip I discovered a woeful lack of people photos!

At any rate, I did get some people shots on this phase of the trip, out by the old oak tree. Above are the three generations: Mama, me, Lauren.

June 6 we attended the wedding of Terri Wilbanks and Jim Rice in Mobile. Terri and I have been friends since college. What a wonderful day!! Click for more wedding photos: Wedding

2009 Day 154 Southern Trip Begins

June 5 I started the morning early, in the pouring rain, cleaning my fish pond pump. Then I sat in traffic forever before finally heading toward Atlanta, about 1.5 hours later than planned. After picking up Tony around lunchtime, we drove to Auburn where we added my nephew Michael to our carload, and finally arrived in St. Elmo in time for a Shrimp Feast.

We had boiled shrimp from the boat, George's famous french fries, and fresh corn on the cob. Like in my childhood, we simply put newspaper on the table and dove in. What a meal!! Family, good memories, and delicious food--it doesn't get much better than that.

Irene's house--full of memories, love, and irreplaceable family items--gone. Arson.

How many times have I seen Irene sitting out here chatting? Gone. Senseless arson.

It's a sort of death. Wiped out without warning, with no appeal, by an incomprehensible act of arson. I'm grieving the loss.

Tony and I took a break from cleaning out his storage facility, and walked at a lovely park with wide, paved trails. On either side of part of the trail was a boggy area--full of wildlife!

A brake light went out, so we had to remove the entire back panel. I figured we'd just change all four lights and be done with it. Three of the four bulbs were shaped the same, so you'd assume they were the same...until after you bought them and tried to install them. Fortunately we did the installation in the auto parts place parking lot, so could go right back in and make the exchange.

Little Stony Man Cliffs, on a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park (Virginia). May 19, 2009. Spectacular. The weather was gorgeous, the views spectacular, and the company of my son wonderful. A great day!

Small creatures of the trail (Shenandoah National Park in Virginia). Photos of the larger creatures did not turn out so well. While driving out of the park along the winding roads, we encountered numerous deer which were absolutely unafraid of the car and would not be in any hurry to get out of the road. While hiking, we came up on a rabbit that was a bit more skittish, but which sat and posed provocatively. Unfortunately the light was fading by this time and all shots are fuzzy.
